What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of medicine that has been practised worldwide for over 200 years. The remedies are made from plants, animal substances, minerals and salts. The source material is diluted to such a degree that hardly any of the original material is present in the remedies. In fact, at higher dilutions none of the original material is present. The power of the remedies is in the energetic field created by the original substance that is stored in, and released by, the remedy. The task of the homeopath is to identify the one remedy that most closely matches the complete picture of the patient. The term 'holistic' is often used and this simply means all of the patient's mental, emotional and physical symptoms are taken into account before choosing a remedy.
Can homeopathy help ?
Homeopathy attempts to treat the whole person, rather than provide a pill for specific conditions, because of the way it works, it is difficult to prove scientifically that it can help with any particular disease or condition. Patients taking medication from their GPs can take homeopathic remedies at the same time. I will not suggest you stop taking existing medication but will be happy to discuss your case with your GP if requested to do so.
What happens at a consultation ?
The first consultation usually takes between 60-90 minutes. It is an informal discussion that allows me to ask questions about all of your symptoms. In addition, I will also often ask about diet, sleep patterns, personality, worries and general aspects, such as whether you feel the cold. Clinical or physical examinations are not part of the consultation process. These need to be performed by your GP. When the consultation is over I will typically spend a further 3-8 hours using homeopathic repertories and Materia Medicas (software and books) to determine the best remedy for you. This will be sent to you by post within one week of the consultation. If I need to order the remedy it may add 1-2 days to this delivery date. Follow-up consultations will focus on assessing the action of the prescription and should take between 20 - 45 minutes.
A little about me.
I trained to be a homeopath at the British School of Homoeopathy and am currently registered with the Alliance of Registered Homeopaths. I first experienced homeopathy as a patient in 1987 and have been back a number of times over the years. I feel I've always benefitted from the treatment and found the time spent at each session to be a healing experience in addition to the remedies prescribed.
