Pilates is a system of exercises designed to strengthen all the muscles in your body and is an all round fantastic type of exercise. It has been proven to help with many conditions from bad posture to incontinence. It is a low impact form of exercise that helps to improve posture by strengthening the deep muscles of the core, and helps to re-balance the body. Pilates is suitable for everyone as the exercises are designed to put minimum strain on the body and the joints. The exercises also aim to challenge the body's capabilities through time. As you get stronger you will be able to move further along with the exercises and increase the intensity as you progress up the levels.
In today's lifestyle, back problems are one of the most common complaints. Regular Pilates sessions will help improve back function and stability as the technique strengthens and stabilizes your spine from neck to lower back. Pilates exercises lengthen and strengthen the muscles and will help to ultimately get rid of poor posture. Modern life puts many stresses on muscle and joint patterns on your body. These stressful patterns de-stabilize the body's natural balance causing pain and speeds up degeneration. Pilates will help stretch and strengthen these stressed muscles allowing normal function to be resorted.
People undertake pilates for a variety of reasons, not just back pain. Some of them simply want a stronger core, leaner muscles, or improved balance. Pilates will help with all of these things! It is especially good for new mums as it will help with post natal stresses and stomach strengthening after pregnancy.
I teach group fitness classes including pilates throughout Gloucestershire in a variety of gyms, health clubs and schools. What I have gained from this experience is that there is a real need for a more focused and personal approach. This can be achieved in a one to one setting. My participants talk to me about a variety of issues they are experiencing, which pilates exercises help with, but in a class setting where there is simply a general approach, they weren't getting the most benefit. You can't cater for that one person in a class setting where there may be 30 people. One to one sessions allow you to work more specifically with your problems and allow you to gain as much as possible from an all over body workout.
