Roger worked in the NHS for 20 years as a nurse and senior manager before specializing as a psychological therapist.
He has worked in GP surgeries in Devon, Gloucester and Cheltenham, helping people with depression, and anxiety and other problems. Roger was formerly the mental health lead for West Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust. Until 2006 he was chair of SHARE Young People’s Counselling Service. He has become known for his approachability and respect for his patients.
‘Often I see people who feel themselves to be failing, or not as good as other people’ he says.’ But what is always evident to me is the determination and courage that people show. I like to think I can help people get back in touch with their own respect for themselves.’
Roger’s main psychological therapy training has been in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), hypnotherapy, EMDR and solution focused brief therapy. Because he is skilled in many different approaches, he is able to tailor packages of help across a wide range of conditions.
Roger is a member of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the EMDR Association. He is a registered nurse. Each of these requires him to keep himself updated clinically and to behave ethically. People seeking psychological therapy may well be at lonely and vulnerable places in their lives. It is important that they are able to have confidence that their therapist has only their best interests in mind.
Roger always encourages potential patients to meet him before starting any therapy. ‘As human beings we have good gut instincts about each other. I like to be sure that my patients have had the chance to test me out,’ he says.
Roger has a Master of Science degree in Evidence Based Healthcare from the University of Oxford.
He is married with four children, two step children, two grandchildren and a cat. He loves to sail and has completed two Atlantic crossings. Email Roger Haynes
