What is Shiatsu Acupressure Massage ?

A deeply therapeutic and relaxing massage

using ancient wisdom and practice to relieve the stresses and ills of our modern world.

Shiatsu is a wonderful treatment to sooth away the stresses of our modern lifestyles, deeply effective, creating long lasting substantial change to sense of well being and health. Because of it's foundations in Chinese Medicine, utilising acupressure points and meridians, Shiatsu can specifically help resolve a vast array of health conditions. Some of these for example include:

Stress and repetative strain injuries

Headaches and migraine

Respiratory illnesses including asthma, bronchitis, hayfever

Joint pain, Joint stiffness or imobility

Tension, anxiety and depression

Skin conditions, eczema

Exhaustion and physical or emotional weakness

Digestive disorders, constipation, irritable bowel, spasms and pain

Painful menstruation, back pain, pain after child birth

Rheumatic and arthritic complaints

Backpain, sciatica, frozen shoulders

Conditions following sprains and injuries

How Does it Work?

A simple Japanese word meaning "finger pressure" ' Shiatsu' is the name coined earlier this century to describe this increasingly distinguished form of therapeutic massage and healing.

Massage, acupuncture, moxibustion and herbalism, had for centuries been the component parts of Traditional Chinese Medicine. As Traditional Chinese Medicine moved into Japan 'Shiatsu' developed and took on its own form.

In Shiatsu skilled pressure, movement and stretches are applied to the body to effect acupressure points and energy lines (meridians). Shiatsu works by rebalancing the body's vital energy flow in order to promote calm, relaxation, focus, creativity, good health, and treat specific problems.

Although energy (Ki) is present everywhere in the body, there are many places where it accumulates (acupressure points) or flows in lines (meridians) near the surface. In stress and illness this energy appears as disturbed or blocked and can present as symptoms as physical pain, headaches, mood swings, fatigue, mobility problems etc. Such conditions, and more internal ones, can be relieved by applying specific massage techniques, movement and pressure to these energy lines and points and corresponding areas.

Shiatsu Treatments -Traditional and Modern

For traditional shiatsu treatment it is best to wear loose comfortable clothing such as a track or jogging suit as treatment takes place on a traditional Shiatsu Futon (padded surface at floor level).

For 'stress busting' back, neck and shoulder treatments relaxing therapeutic oils are applied directly to the upper body. Here your upper body will be discretely unclothedand treatment takes place on a modern massage couch.

Prevention is better than cure

Shiatsu is a wonderfully enjoyable preventative treatment, and when used in this way greatly improves bodily health and well being; preventing colds, back aches, stress, emotional imbalance and long spells of discomfort.

Regular treatments are recommend to ensure that your body maintains a healthy balance in all aspects of its daily functioning.

Because an imbalance of Ki in the body always precedes the overt symptoms of disease, all aspects of Oriental medicine have a preventative role. However, their suitability to treat specific diseases is of paramount importance and often appropriate to be treated by Shiatsu.

Treatment for specific conditions

For specific conditions the duration and frequency of treatment will vary from person to person, as will the total number of sessions. How long the course of treatment will be to clear a condition for each individual can be assessed after the second treatment has been given. This gives time for the practitioner to see how your health is initially, how your body responds to Shiatsu and how your body can carry on the treatment during your everyday life.

Shiatsu affects all levels of our being, the physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual: The level of treatment is attuned to the individual’s personal state of health, energetic balance and desired outcome.
