What is Bowen Technique?
Bowen is one of the world's leading professional techniques in structural and spinal therapy for lasting pain removal and rejuvenation.
This remarkably effective technique initiates an automatic regulation process to occur in the nervous system and consequently throughout the whole body. Rapidly reducing symptoms, clearing their causes, increasing energy, and restoring an unmistakable feeling of well being.
Typically the response to Bowen is profoundly effective - even long term conditions and those unresolved by other therapies or surgical treatment show impressive change within a very short period of time.
Bowen allows the body to naturally regulate and heal itself, so uninvasive that it is safe for all people including babies, the elderly, people in extreme pain, and fragile health conditions.
Well known for it's effectiveness in treating
pain and disorders of the joints, muscle and posture,
Bowen is also adept at addressing internal ailments
Many Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Acupuncturist, Sports Therapists and Physiotherapists have trained in The Bowen Technique and so impressed with it's effectiveness now use it as their first choice of therapy.
Russell Dick, an Osteopath for 20 years
& former Dean of Studies at the Northern Counties School of Osteopathy, says:
"Bowen has turned my practice on its head, with 80% of my patients being given Bowen as a first choice".
What does a treatment involve?
Your first Bowen appointment will last 1 hour, and follow ups take approximately 45 minutes. Treatment for the most part is performed through light clothing. Characteristically, skillfull soft tissue manipulation is applied adjacent to the length of the spine, hips and cranium, then depending on presenting conditions treatment may then be applied to shoulders, jaw, face, limbs, and /or joints. Two or three treatments, at weekly intervals, are often sufficient to achieve lasting relief from even long standing pain, although further treatments may sometimes be required. To receive maximum benefit it is recommended that other physical therapies are not mixed with The Bowen Technique, e.g. Chiropractic, Massage, Physiotherapy, etc.
The Body has it's own natural law of balance, recovery and healing. Lifestyle excesses and deficiences all have their resultant toll on our health. Bowen allows for each persons individual state of health. Each persons corrective responses in their return to health will vary; dependent on their initial state of health and influences of their current lifestyle.

Bowen In Practice
Infant Colic (boy, aged 4 months - 1 treatment)
J was suffering from severe colic after meals, this was distressing for him and for his parents. During the Bowen treatment, the baby seemed to relax completely. After this one treatment he had no further colic.
Sports Injury (man, aged 23 - 4 treatments)
As a cricketer and rugby player, H's left leg was in a brace following cartilage removal and damage to the AC ligament. His right leg was in plaster nearly to the knee due to further ligament problems and he was on anti-inflammatory tablets. Pain and swelling in the left knee diminished by 60% following the first Bowen treatment, and after four treatments the hospital verdict was that the knees were now very stable and that a further anticipated operation would no longer be necessary.
Pain: Lower back into hips and knee (woman, aged 26 - 3 treatments)
F is a very tall (6'2") nursery nurse, so works with tiny people and furniture all day. She had had this problem for 2 - 3 years. MRI scans had not revealed any cause for the pains and physiotherapy treatment had been to no avail. After the second Bowen treatment she said:
"it is 99% better than it was" After three treatments, the problems were completely gone and the resolution holding.
Sciatica (man, aged 40 - 1 treatment)
P was unable to put weight on his right foot and was in severe pain from the buttock right down the leg. He was extremely tense and tight. The therapist gave him one treatment, observing P's body relaxing during the 40 minutes of the treatment. He was virtually pain free when he got up and was walking normally. Two years later, the problem has not returned.
Frozen Shoulder (man, aged 62 - 3 treatments)
D arrived with a frozen shoulder that had restricted his natural arm movement to less than 20% of normal. The shoulder was exceedingly painful to lie on and as an active man keen on amateur dramatics, it was making life difficult. He was seen three times, after which the shoulder had returned to 100% range of movement with no further pain.
People who have received other treatment to no effect
often find Bowen Technique has the scope and subtlety of approach
to treat their condition effectively.
Prevention is better than cure
Bowen is also a preventative therapy and when used in this way greatly improves bodily health and well being, avoiding long spells of fatigue and discomfort. Regular check-ups are recommended to ensure that your body maintains a healthy balance in all aspects of it's daily functioning.
Where did Bowen originate?
The Bowen Technique was the amazing life's work of bodywork and osteopathic genius Thomas Bowen 1916-1982. He developed a great interest in body work and spent time working in the Sports field. Overtime he established a full time practice in remedial therapy using the technique he had developed.
Treating an incredible 13,000 patients a year, 88% of whom only required two or three treatments to relieve longstanding pain! Mr Bowen died in the early 1980's but today there are a number of flourishing therapies based on his work.
The Bowen Technique, known to some as Neurostructural Integration Technique, today has been carefully crafted to ensure the same dependable level of health care that Tom Bowen himself was able to provide. Today the reputation of Bowen as being one of the world's leading professional therapies is a powerful living tribute to the legacy of Tom Bowen.
